Experimental European Martial Arts

Experimental What?

This course is designed to explore and test out theories of historical martial skills with less well developed traditions. But what does that mean exactly? Well, for us that means performing experimental archaeology with weapon sets that we have neither a living tradition nor traditional historical treatises to examine. It also means a lot of fun! While participation in this course does not require any previous knowledge of historical martial skills, it is recommended to participate in the beginner level longsword class to enter with a better understanding of the fundamentals behind the sciences of defense.

We'll play around with systems like Viking Shields, Sword vs Spear, Flails, and much more!

Our purpose here is to:

1) Have fun exploring off the beaten path weapon systems, especially asymmetric weapon combat (eg. sword vs axe)

2) To expand our knowledge of the universal language of martial skills

3) Because Vikings are cool! (and they didn't write anything down)
